Bangladesh Computer Samity, popularly known as BCS, was formed three decades ago with a vision to become the guiding light of the Bangladesh ICT sector and safeguard the interest of all industry stakeholders. With its relentless and sincere service since its inception in 1987, BCS has established itself as the apex ICT business and trade industry association of organization of the country. After becoming the first registered ICT trade association of Bangladesh in 1992 with 15 member companies, BCS now has 2,630 ICT companies as its members. BCS has 10 branches— Barishal, Chattogram, Cumilla, Jashore, Khulna, Mymensing, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sylhet & Tangail - across Bangladesh to spread the awareness of ICT services and products among the rural people.
BCS introduced now-famous ICT expositions to the country in the year 1993 with the title ‘BCS Computer Show’. The apex ICT trade body joined the Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO) as an associate member in 1996 and expanded its activity and reach beyond the border. ASOCIO is an ICT federation organized by ICT associations representing 24 countries across the Asia Pacific. Today’s affordability of internet connectivity is the success of BCS’ advocacy since 1996 on behalf of VSAT license and economical bandwidth charge in the country.
BCS made its contribution to the policy-making level by making 45 recommendations to the JRC committee in 1997. The historic recommendations included the withdrawal of duties, tax & VAT from the computer and its accessories, formation of National ICT Task Force headed by the leader of the government, declaring ICT as a thrust sector, formation of National ICT Policy, special incentives for the local and foreign investors and entrepreneurs among others. Bangladesh government included Computer Education in curricula of SSC and HSC levels in 1998. The same year government also decided to withdraw all duties, taxes, and VAT on computer and computer accessories. In the same year,
BCS became a member of The World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA), which is a consortium of ICT industry associations from economies around the world representing over 90 percent of the world's ICT market. Bangladesh Computer Samity established BCS Computer City, a one-stop ICT market, at the IDB Bhaban in Dhaka in 1999. The market has been a role model in South Asia. The Samity Introduced ASOCIO Multilateral Trade Visit on ICT in the Asian-Oceanian region starting from Dhaka in 2000.BCS obtained full membership of ASOCIO the following year. BCS’ other success came in 2002 when the Bangladesh government decided to connect Bangladesh to the international super data highway via SEA-ME-WE4 consortium via Submarine Cable Line. BCS has been working on this for a long time.
Following BCS’ initiatives, the country's first ICT Incubator was launched in 2002. The Bangladesh government in association with BCS started a nationwide ICT awareness program in 2005. In a bid to provide a strong technological foundation, BCS has been designing and organizing awareness campaigns for school children. After a decade, in 2008, BCS received a National Award as a recognition for its contribution to the development and expansion of ICT in the country. BCS is the only ICT trade association and 256 registered trade bodies in the country to have received this award.BCS, in 2009, had introduced ‘BCS Digital Expo’ 2009 based on digital lifestyle. In the same year, the oldest ICT trade body took a special project ‘BCS Digital School’ with a view to raising the use of ICT in education.
BCS distributed computers, internet modems, and other materials to over 50 educational institutions across the country. The same year Bangladesh Ministry of ICT, Banglalink Digital Communication Ltd, and Daffodil International University won WITSA Global Excellence Award. BCS has nominated them for the award. BCS also unveiled ‘BCS Innovation Centre’ to organize training, symposium, discussion sessions among members. Bangladesh Computer Samity joined the Asia Pacific Council for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (AFACT) in 2015. 2015 is also the year when BCS introduced the famous ‘Bangladesh ICT Expo’. BCS president was elected as vice-chairman of AFACT in 2016, showing competency in the global arena.
The same year, Bangladesh has been selected for hosting the ‘World Congress on IT (WCIT/WICT) 2021’ a mega-event of World Information and Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) In 2017, the BCS president was elected as AFACT chairman by AFACT Steering Committee and Bangladesh hosted the 36th AFACT Plenary Meeting the following year.
2011, BCS received yet another National Award in the category ‘The Most Popular Non-Government initiative. The same year, BCS established the laptop market ‘Eastern Plus BCS laptop bazaar’ at the Eastern Plus Shopping Complex in the capital Dhaka. BCS’ relentless effort brought another historical and timely success when the government made computer education mandatory in high schools.
BCS continued to expand by establishing the country’s largest ICT market at Jamuna Future Park Shopping Complex in 2013. In 2014 BCS introduced a warranty policy to ensure a robust business environment and consumer rights for ICT products
